You don’t need to be a big brand to have great packaging

There’s an assumption a lot of small product businesses make, and it holds them back more than they realise.
It goes something like this: foiling, embossing, properly engineered packaging with a real finish — that’s for the big players. The supermarket brands. The companies with a dedicated procurement team and minimum orders in the tens of thousands. Not for us. We hear it regularly. And in our experience, it simply isn’t true.

Where the assumption comes from.
It’s not hard to see how it takes hold. Search for packaging online and you’ll find plenty of suppliers with eye-watering minimums, complex setup fees, and a process that feels designed for businesses ten times your size. So smaller brands either settle for something off-the-shelf that doesn’t quite fit, or they spend more than they should with a supplier who’s doing them a favour by taking the job on. Neither option is right. And neither is inevitable.

What’s actually possible at lower volumes.
We’re a family business that has been making packaging since 1980. In that time we’ve produced everything from tens of thousands of boxes for national brands down to a few hundred for a candle maker just starting to get traction in independent retailers. The finish doesn’t change based on the quantity. A foiled box at 500 units gets the same attention as one at 50,000. The die-cutting is done on our own equipment. The embossing, the gluing, the final quality check — all of it happens in our building in Sherborne, by people who’ve been doing this for years.

What does change at lower volumes is the conversation we have upfront. We’ll be straight with you about what works at your quantity, what the most cost-effective route to the finish you want looks like, and where there’s room to do something really striking without blowing the budget.

Why packaging matters more than most small brands think.
Your packaging isn’t just a container. It’s the first physical thing a customer picks up — on a shelf in a deli, at a market stall, when it arrives through someone’s letterbox as a gift. If it feels considered and well-made, the product inside feels the same way. If it feels like an afterthought, that impression sticks — no matter how good what’s inside actually is. We’ve seen it make a real difference for brands at every stage. Getting the packaging right often coincides with getting into new stockists, increasing average order values, and building the kind of brand that people photograph and share.

The businesses we often work with.
Typically owner-managed, a product they’re genuinely proud of, and a growing list of stockists or direct customers to supply. They order regularly — not necessarily in huge quantities, but consistently — and they want a supplier who understands their product and can be relied on every time. They don’t have a designer in-house, so we handle that too. Brief us on what you’re trying to achieve and we’ll take it from there — structure, print, finish, delivery.

If that sounds like your business and you’ve been assuming the packaging you really want is out of reach, it’s worth a conversation. We might surprise you.
