Why your packaging partner matters as much as your packaging design

by | 20 May, 2026

You’ve spent time on your brand. You know what colours you want, roughly what shape the box should be, maybe you’ve even sketched something out. The design is the exciting bit — and rightly so. It’s what customers see. But here’s what we’ve noticed in 46 years of making packaging: the businesses that end up with truly great packaging aren’t always the ones with the biggest budgets or the most detailed briefs. They’re the ones who found the right partner and trusted them to get on with it.

The wrong printer costs you more than money.
We hear variations of the same story regularly. A product business — a candle maker, a food producer, a home fragrance brand — goes online, finds a printer offering low minimums and fast turnaround, and places an order. The boxes arrive. The colour’s a bit off. The crease isn’t quite right. The foil looks flat. It’s not terrible, but it’s not what they imagined either. They live with it because the alternatives seem complicated. And then they reorder the same thing, because changing suppliers feels like a project.
What they actually needed wasn’t just a printer. They needed someone who could look at their product, understand what they’re trying to achieve on the shelf, and bring the design capability to make it happen — then produce it consistently every time they reorder.

Everything under one roof changes things.
We’re a family business based in Sherborne, Dorset. We design, print, foil, emboss, die-cut and glue packaging in-house. That matters more than it might sound. When one team handles the whole process, there’s nowhere to hide and no one else to blame. The people who design your box are ten metres away from the press that prints it and the machine that cuts it. If something’s not right, we know immediately and we sort it — before it lands on your doorstep.
It also means we can have honest conversations early. If a finish you’ve seen somewhere isn’t going to work with your board weight, we’ll tell you. If there’s a more cost-effective way to achieve what you’re after, we’ll suggest it. That’s what a partner does. A printer just takes the file and runs it.

The clients we work best with.
We do our best work for businesses who make a product they’re proud of and want their packaging to reflect that. Typically owner-managed, maybe 10 or so people, ordering regularly to keep stock moving. They don’t have a designer in-house, so they lean on us for that too. They’re not looking for the cheapest quote. They’re looking for someone they can rely on — the same quality every run, lead times they can plan around, and someone who picks up the phone. That’s what we’ve been doing since 1980. If it sounds like what you need, we’d be glad to have a conversation.
