Foiling, embossing and spot UV:

What they are, when to use them, and what they actually cost

If you’ve ever picked up a product and thought ‘the packaging on that is really good’ — there’s a fair chance what you were responding to was a finishing technique. Foiling, embossing, spot UV. The things that make a box feel considered rather than just functional. We get asked about these finishes regularly, often by product businesses who aren’t sure which is right for them, whether their volumes are high enough, or whether the cost is going to put it out of reach. So here’s a straightforward guide to what each one does and when it makes sense.

Foiling.

Foiling applies a metallic or coloured finish to specific areas of your packaging using heat, pressure, and a foil sheet. Gold and silver are the most common choices, but the range is wide — copper, rose gold, holographic, and a full spectrum of solid colours are all available. Where it works best is on brand names, logos, or any element you want to catch the eye on shelf. The light-reflective quality draws attention in a way that printed colour simply doesn’t. It works particularly well on darker board where the contrast is strongest. Foiling requires a die — a tool made to the shape of the element being foiled. That’s a one-off tooling cost, this cost starts at around £50 and the bigger the area the greater the die cost but once made it’s reusable across all future runs.

Embossing.

Embossing creates a raised (or recessed, in the case of debossing) impression in the board itself — no ink, no foil, just texture. It’s a tactile finish: customers feel it before they consciously register it, and that subconscious impression of quality is exactly what makes it effective. It works particularly well on logos, brand names, and decorative patterns. Premium candle and home fragrance packaging uses it extensively for this reason — a blind emboss on a plain board box can look extraordinarily elegant. Foil embossing — combining the two processes — gives the strongest premium result, though it adds to the tooling cost and is best reserved for elements that genuinely warrant it.

Spot UV.

Spot UV applies a gloss varnish to specific areas of the print while the rest of the surface stays matte. The contrast between gloss and matte is the effect — it draws the eye to logos, patterns, or design details in a way that’s subtle but very effective. Unlike foiling and embossing, spot UV doesn’t require a separate tool in the same way, which can make it a more accessible entry point to premium finishing. It looks its best on designs where the matte base is doing something interesting — a strong colour or a textured surface — and the gloss element provides a counterpoint.

We have our unique inline process which is vey similar to spot gloss UV but printed in and comes in at a lower cost – worth considering! Read more on our Remous Blog https://www.remous.com/printing-services/hi-lite-making-your-print-stand-out/

Which one is right for your product?

There’s no universal answer, but a few principles help:

  • Use foiling when you want immediate visual impact on shelf — particularly for brand names and hero elements
  • Use embossing when tactile quality matters as much as visual — premium food, candles, gifts, anything that will be handled and unboxed
  • Use spot UV when you want to elevate the design without adding another colour or metallic element
  • Combinations are possible — foil embossing especially — but restraint tends to give better results than layering everything on at once

What about cost and volumes?

The assumption that these finishes are only for large brands with large budgets isn’t accurate. We produce foiled and embossed packaging at relatively modest volumes — the tooling cost is a one-off, and the per-unit cost comes down as volumes increase. What matters is having a supplier who can advise on the most cost-effective route to the finish you want at your quantity. If you’re not sure which finish is right for your product, bring us a brief and we’ll tell you what we’d recommend and why. We can also show you samples so you can see and feel the difference before committing.
